A couple have been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a 13-month-old boy in Preston.
The man and woman, both 25, were held on Thursday morning at a flat in the city centre as enquiries continued into how the toddler died.
A police spokesman said: “Two people are currently being interviewed after being arrested on suspicion of murder.
“A post mortem has been carried out on the child, but as yet the cause of death has not been ascertained.”
The couple were detained by detectives at an address in Church Street. It is believed the toddler was pronounced dead at the Royal Preston Hospital after being rushed there by ambulance.
Paramedics were called to the flat at 6.50am on Saturday after a report that a child at the address was not breathing.
Detective Supt Paul Withers, of Lancashire Constabulary’s Force Major Investigation Team, said: “This is a tragic incident where a little boy has lost his life.
“A full investigation is underway to try to establish exactly what has happened. Specially trained officers are offering support to the wider family.”
