A couple robbed in a late night handbag snatch as they walked home from a New Year party in Preston have warned others to be on their guard.
The husband and wife, who were left shocked by the attack in Egerton Road, Ashton, fear the gang of three teenagers could strike again.
“We would hate other unsuspecting people in that area to fall victim like we did,” said the 61-year-old husband who asked to remain anonymous. “We don’t think it was just a one-off. It looked like they had planned it.”
The couple had left the Wellington pub in Tulketh Road after seeing in the New Year and were heading home along Egerton Road at around 1.30am when the thieves struck. Two of the youths tore the bag from the woman’s shoulder and ran off. Her husband gave chase, but could not catch them.
The third teenager, who claimed not to be with the other two, then engaged them in conversation and walked with them towards the Larches Estate. He too fled when the couple asked him where he lived. “I chased him too, but I’m 61 and they were all too fast for me,” said the husband.
“The third youth walked with us for a while along with us and said he didn’t know who the other two were. But he got edgy when we asked where he lived and he ran off. Again he was too fast for me.
“We were suspicious he might have been trying to see where we lived because there were door keys in the bag. So we’ve changed the locks.”
The bag, described as black and grey simulated snake skin with maroon stripes on one side, contained around £70 in cash and a mobile phone. Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
