Naveed Shah, 37, of Blackburn Road, Great Harwood, East Lancashire, admitted conspiracy to commit fraud and conspiracy to steal, relating to multiple hired cars worth in excess of £200,000.

He created a complex scam in which he stole the identities of innocent people, took out false motor insurance policies and posed as a care assistant who had been a genuine victim of several car crashes.

The offences took place in the West Midlands and Exeter.

Justice Turner, sitting at Preston Crown Court, jailed him for two years and said it was a “sophisticated criminal enterprise.”

Firm APU Ltd and its team of ex police and fraud intelligence officers became aware of the suspicious claims and launched a privately funded investigation including two staged ‘sting’ operations.
