Crash alert at crossing

Youngsters in part of Lancashire have been criticised for putting lives at risk at a level crossing.

British Transport Police were called after reports of youngsters messing about at Low Moor level crossing in Clitheroe.

Officers say a gang of youths had been seen swinging on the barriers while they were up, causing the crossing to break.

Network Rail quickly fixed the problem, but officers have warned the youths' actions could have had serious consequences.

PC Steve Davies said: "They had been swinging on the barriers whilst in the up position and caused a malfunction at the crossing. Fortunately it was corrected by Network Rail within minutes. Had a train been coming, the warnings to motorists and pedestrians may not have been sufficient and we could have had to deal with a serious incident."
