The world may be gripped by football fever, but schoolboy Robert Wilson has a very special reason to be excited
For the 15-year-old is heading to Brazil to watch his soccer heroes play in the World Cup – after a children’s charity offered to make his dream come true.
Sports fanatic Robert suffers from severe Crohn’s Disease, which is a long-term condition causing inflammation of the lining of the digestive system.
He has suffered with the illness since he was five years old and as a result of the disease, Robert had to have his large bowel removed and, although he recently had it reconnected, he still suffers from symptoms of the illness on a daily basis.
Robert loves football and cricket and finds it very hard when his illness stops him from playing.
He said he really enjoys watching England play on TV and it has been a long-time dream of his to watch them play live.
Robert, who plays for his local Corinthians FC, was referred to Starlight for a wish by a family friend and the charity wrote to the family and said they would be delighted to grant Robert a special wish.
It didn’t take long for the Tarleton Academy pupil to decide what his special wish would be … to watch England play in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children and young people with serious and terminal illnesses, is sending the teen, his brother Thomas,18, and parents Janet and Andrew to watch England play their final group game against Costa Rica on Tuesday at the Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte.
Robert wrote to Starlight and said: “From an early age I have loved and played football. I am a goalkeeper for my local team but unfortunately due to illness, I miss a lot of games.
“The England team are my heroes and I always enjoy watching them on television. My biggest wish is to watch them at the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.”
The tickets for England’s final group match have been donated by FIFA and, despite England’s lack of winning form, Robert is absolutely over the moon to have tickets and his family is really excited about seeing him have his dearest wish granted.
He said: “I’m really looking forward to seeing England play in the World Cup and am very grateful to Starlight for granting my wish.”
Starlight has arranged for the family, who live in Tarleton, near Preston, to fly out to Brazil for a week, during which they will watch the match and soak up the amazing World Cup atmosphere.
Janet said: “It is really exciting. Robert is the envy of his pals at the moment.
“We are really pleased for him, it is a dream come true.
“He just wanted to go and watch England play but never expected it to be at the World Cup.”
