Family and friends of a courageous cancer fighter will come together at the St Catherine’s Hospice Moonlight and Memories Walk on Saturday.
‘Team Angie Grant’ will be made up of 21 walkers, including Angie’s daughters Sarah Grainger and 15-year-old Lucy, and her sisters Alex Smyth and Jackie Rennock.
Their eldest sister Ray Dewhurst is unable to take part after undergoing treatment for lung cancer, but will be cheering them on from home.
Alex, from Ashton, said she wanted to do something in her sister’s honour, whilst giving something back to St Catherine’s. She said: “Angie chose to stay at home rather than come into the hospice, but it was such a great source of support knowing they were at the end of the phone for advice, and they came out to see her on several occasions which was a great help. The Moonlight and Memories Walk seems like a very fitting tribute to her, whilst raising money to help other people access the same amazing care.”
Angie, from Fulwood, had battled breast cancer two years before she died in August 2012, just weeks after being given the heart-breaking news the disease had returned and this time was in her liver.
She had previously undergone surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy in 2010 and by the time of daughter Sarah’s wedding to Ben in March 2012 was feeling happy and healthy.
Sarah, 24, said: “She was so well that day and she looked fantastic. I’m so pleased I have those amazing memories of that special time together.”
That July Angie found out the cancer had returned and was incurable, she was just 51.
That same day, Sarah and Ben found out they were expecting their first child, Jack, who is now one.
Sarah, who lives in Fulwood, added: “I’m so happy I got to share that news with her. Jack has been a great source of happiness for the family – something so positive to focus on.”
