Villagers have turned out in force to object to new housing plans on “arguably the county’s worst maintained road.”
Applicants J Goode and E Tinsley have submitted plans to build seven properties - two ‘affordable’ semi-detached bungalows, four ‘affordable’ mews, and an open-market detached house, on a wedge-shaped piece of Green Belt land in Hall Lane, Longton.
The site has been the subject of three previous planning applications each of which has been turned down.
More than 25 concerned locals turned out for a recent meeting of Longton Parish Council on Tuesday, and now councillors have joined them in lodging an offical objection.
County Coun Graham Gooch, who is also Chairman of the Parish Council said: “The land is in Green Belt and is not on the Local Plan for housing.
“The road is also totally unsuitable to carry anymore traffic. It is very narrow with no footways and in a bad state of repair.
“It was just a country lane with access to market gardens and farms but now suffers the pounding of heavy goods vehicle going to and from the United Utilities water treatment works.
“The road badly needs proper resurfacing but as it is an unclassified road it will not be eligible under the highway strategy, to be looked at for at least years.”
Coun Gooch also raised concerns about a lack of parking for the proposed homes.
Agents Emery Planning, acting on behalf of the applicants, declined to comment on the objections, but in a design and access statement to the council, states the application “would not significantly harm the character and appearance of the open countryside, Green Belt or the amentiy of adjoining dwellings”.
The agents also state that because Hall Lane is not a through road, highway impact would be “negligible”.
