TV star and Preston funnyman, John Thomson has given his backing to a super-slimmer’s marathon challenge.
Dave Beever lost almost 40 per cent of his body weight in just a year after vowing to run his first marathon in memory of his wife, Diane, who lost her six-year battle with breast cancer last year.
And when the former Coronation Street star and All Hallows Catholic High School alumnus heard of Dave’s dramatic weight loss and fund-raising for cancer charity, Breast Cancer Care, he immediately wanted to lend his support.
John, who also attended Runshaw college and was brought up in Preston, said: “It’s amazing, I had never come across someone who’d lost that much weight in a year.
“He’s turned his life around and all for a great cause – it’s an incredible achievement.”
When Diane passed away, Dave weighed a massive 24 stones and had done no exercise for 40 years, even struggling to get up a flight of stairs.
But inspired by the courage his wife showed during her illness and fulfilling a dying wish of hers that he got into shape, he has lost nearly nine stone, dropped five shirt sizes and lost eight inches off his waist in order to raise £100,000 for charity.
And on April 13 Dave, who has written a blog about his progress at www.runningwithdiane.blogspot.co.uk will tackle the Rotterdam marathon, the city where Diane grew up and spent her childhood.
Dave, who lives in Bolton, said: ““Every time I run, she runs with me.
“We have done everything together for over 20 years, why should now be any different?
“She is my inspiration and driving force.”
