City centre car park free for shoppers

A Preston city centre car park will be free for shoppers from this weekend throughout the Christmas period.

Lancashire County Council has confirmed its 136-space car park on Arthur Street, off Pitt Street, close to County Hall, will be free every weekend until the festive period arrives.

The period starts from 8am today until 8.30pm and will run until Sunday, December 23.

Council leader Geoff Driver said he hoped the offer would encourage more people to shop in the city centre over the crucial Christmas trading period.

He said: “County Hall is a big place and we have a lot of parking spaces here for our employees, but they go unused at the weekend because most of the complex is closed.

“I hope it encourages people to visit for longer and give local traders a boost.”

He added the car park would be opened free on “a trial basis” with a view to continuing it on a long-term basis in the New Year.
