Charlie is Mr October

A family dog has proved he's all heart when it comes to charity by becoming a star of a fund-raising calendar.

Charlie, a Yorkshire Terrier cross, features on the October page of a heart charity's calendar.

The three-year-old was chosen for the Cardiomyopathy Association's 2010 calendar after retired primary school teacher Valerie Campbell submitted a painting of him to the charity.

Valerie, 62, from Bare, Morecambe, became a supporter of heart charities after her husband Bob was diagnosed with a heart condition a couple of years ago.

Bob, 63, was found to have dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart becomes enlarged and pumps less strongly.

For her entry, Valerie painted a watercolour of her daughter Julia's dog Charlie wearing a coat decorated with red hearts. He had previously worn it to take part in a sponsored walk along Morecambe promenade for the charity.

Valerie said: "As Charlie's coat was decorated with red hearts for his sponsored walk, it seemed to fit the criteria for the 'heart design' competition. We are delighted with Charlie being a celebrity dog."

* The calendar can be bought for 5.99 from the association's website at www.cardiomyopathy.org
