It’s not quite League Cup standard, but a Preston-based charity is hoping to pull a blinder with a soccer match with a difference.... the players will be blindfolded.

Galloway’s Society for the Blind has joined forces with club in Southport to host a Blind football tournament.

It won’t just be goal shooting skills the teams will need, but the ability to make their way around the pitch with their eyes covered.

Emma Russ, senior fundraiser at Galloway’s, said: “We first had the idea during the world cup, everyone was so excited about the football we thought it would be fun to get people experiencing it in a new way, give them an insight into how blind and visually impaired enjoy the game.”

She added that now they are looking for teams to join in the event, being held at on bank holiday Monday and help raise funds for Galloways.

Emma said things are not quite as hard it may seem to the sighted person.

She added: “Blind football is played slightly differently, the games are shorter and the teams are made up of four blindfolded players, a sighted goalie and two sighted team members off the pitch helping to guide their team members by calling out instructions.: “

The ball also contains small ball bearings so it DNA be heard as it is passed around the pitch.

Anyone interested in joining in the fun can sign up as an individual or as a team of seven, as long as they are aged 15 or over.

Emma said: “his is a great team builder for any local businesses or community groups looking to put together a team and all the money raised on the day will go towards providing support, specialist equipment and activities to local blind and partially sighted people, to help them regain and maintain their independence.”

No experience is necessary, blind folds and full instructions will be given. There will be a £2 charge for people watching the game which will go straight to the charity and there will be a BBQ and bar available.

The event will be held at Rookery, Roe Lane, Southport,
