PUPILS at a Penwortham school are reaching for the stars.
A ceiling displaying the planets and constellations has been installed in the new £750,000 new science block at Priory Academy.
It was designed by the Crow Hills Road school’s technology technician Mick Milne, who made the constellations with LED lights.
It’s all part of a bid to create an open-plan learning environment and has been fulled by the huge interest in astronomy among staff and pupils.
A number of staff took an astronomy GCSE last year and several pupils have already taken the exam this year and are awaiting for the results.
Science teacher Heather Young said: “The ceiling looks superb.”
We decided to promote astronomy because it’s a field of science which young children are often interested in but is not really covered in the secondary curriculum and we wanted to maintain that interest and love of science
She added that it was a real talking point and said: “We wanted to create an inspirational environment for learning.

“It’s important because there are so many opportunities to study at higher education and it gives the chance for young people to work all over the world.
“We want to inspire more of our students to become great scientists.”
The school already boasts the world’s youngest fusioneer, Jamie Edwards, who carried out his record-breaking experiment in the school’s science lab.
Heather added: “The former science block has been there since 1954 and they needed a revamp and we can’t wait for them to officially open in September.”
Teachers Jason Shaw, Garry Armitage and Heather Young all passed their astronomy GCSE last year with top grades and students, including Jamie, Callum Cameron and David Robinson, will be aiming to beat their teachers grades this year.
The science block is the latest in a series of new developments at the school which have included a new technology block, a £1m humanities and languages building and, just this month, a 3G Astro Turf pitch.
