A caravan was completely destroyed by fire on the M6

Fire crews were called to the motorway at around 9.25pm on Saturday.

The camper van was ablaze on the hard shoulder. It had not been involved in a collision.

The occupants had got out safely but the fire had engulfed the vehicle, which contained a propane gas bottle.

Police closed the northbound carriageways and firefighters from Carnforth and Lancaster equipped with breathing apparatus used a hosereel jet with foam injected in the water to extinguish the fire.

Earlier on Saturday crews from Morecambe had been called out to a caravan blaze in Carnforth.

The fire is believed to have been started deliberately.
