Bedroom tax campaigner Veronica Bennett has slammed the demolition of a block of one-bedroom apartments in Penwortham.
Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for South Ribble questioned the logic of flattening The Maltings when the borough does not have enough similar accommodation to offer 600 tenants hit by the Government’s controversial welfare reforms.
“The Bedroom Tax is a vicious attack on our most vulnerable people,” she said.
“They are being asked to pay up to £100 extra a month for it.
And where exactly are they expected to move to?”
Veronica visited the site of the former Maltings with Kingsfold Labour councillor Keith Martin. He said: “We have a government telling people to move into one-bedroom accommodation and a housing association pulling the same accommodation down. The government absolutely should not be punishing people for having a spare room when there is nowhere for them to move to.”
