Talks to stop Liverpool Airport strike

Talks are being held to prevent an airport baggage handlers' strike at Liverpool John Lennon Airport that could cause delays to holidaymakers.

The discussion between union leaders, management and Acas officials was organised as staff prepare to strike.

About 150 employees, employed by ServisAir, voted to stage a continuous strike from Thursday morning in a row over redundancies.

The action would hit summer travellers going abroad on flights with Ryanair, KLM, Wizzair, Flybe and Thomson.

The GMB union claims ServisAir intends to force 51 staff to reapply for 27 jobs.

GMB senior organiser Terry Mellor said: "Both sides have agreed to make a final effort to try to avert this stoppage.

"GMB hope that the company will come to the meeting with proposals that the union can take back to our members to find a way forward in this dispute."
