Space for growth at Preston business

One of the fastest-growing businesses in the North West is planning to expand its Preston site to cope with demand from customers.

Smart Storage, which provides storage space for individuals and businesses, expects to add an extra 10,000 sq ft of space to its site on Lund Street in the city centre.

It hopes to have a planning application passed by Preston Council this month to allow the extension to the back and side of the building.

Managing director Jon Wyles said if it was given the go ahead it expected to start work immediately on the extension, which would boost the size of the site to around 35,000 sq ft.

He said: "The demand is very strong and I would imagine as we go through the year that is only going to continue to grow and therefore we will need this space sooner rather than later.

"The extension would be into a number of offices which we do not use at the front of the building and on to the car park at the back and side of the building.

"We are particularly keen to grow the Preston site as this is the latest in our portfolio of five sites and therefore we are keen to get it full to capacity as soon as possible."

The group has recently fitted out around 10,000 sq ft of space at the former Lancashire Double Glazing premises, which it took over in summer 2008, installing a mezzanine floor.

This extension would be the third phase of development of the building and boost the site to around the same size as its facility on Derby Road in Bootle, Liverpool.

Mr Wyles said: "I am hoping that we can get our sixth and seventh branches open at some point this year, if not then at least to have got started on them.

"We have a number of irons in the fire at sites around the North West with Blackpool, Wigan and locations on the M60 corridor around Manchester among those we are looking at."
