Major questions were today being asked as to why Blackpool’s historic airport faces closure in just two weeks.
Furious staff, community leaders, business chiefs and passengers reacted with alarm after Balfour Beatty announced the Squires Gate terminal is “likely” to shut on October 15 – if a buyer cannot be found by October 7.
Last month it was reported how the company was looking to sell off the operational side of the business which has been losing an estimated £1.5m a year.
Blackpool Airport employs around 100 staff whose jobs are now in the balance.
The timing and speed of yesterday’s announcement has sparked widespread anger and left passengers who have booked flights abroad in limbo.
And one leading Blackpool councillor today hit out at Balfour Beatty’s ownership of the airport while also attacking his own council for not doing enough to promote the regional hub.
