The special event marked work beginning on the next stage of Preston Council’s £50m Markets Quarter development.

Part of the concrete balcony of the current market hall is to be removed, to make way for a giant sheet of glass to be brought in for the new market, under the historic canopy.

Council leader Peter Rankin put the first spade in the ground, marking the start of building works.

He said: “The Markets Quarter development is really taking shape with great progress already having been made with the refurbishment and redecoration of the historic market canopies.

“It’s great to see the next piece of the jigsaw – the new Market Hall – getting underway.

“This is a momentous occasion for Preston Markets.

“With all the other development taking place and coming forward in Preston, the redeveloped Markets Quarter, which also includes a new cinema, restaurants and car park, will be another big attraction for our residents and visitors and promises to be one of the most talked about retail and entertainment destination in the region.
