Budget for the young and the old

Tax expert Tony Medcalf has described Alistair Darling's first Budget as one of few surprises.

The partner, from Preston-based accountants Moore and Smalley, said the tax rises on booze and gas-guzzling cars would not shock many people.

He said: "The main aims have been to cut child poverty by increasing child tax credit and child allowance and to provide greater winter fuel payments for pensioners.

"He has given something to the young and the old."

Tony, of the firm which has more than 300 clients across Lancashire, was in the Lancashire Evening Post's headquarters in Fulwood to watch the Budget and give his reaction first to lep.co.uk.
