Now as the Chorley-based software and e-commerce company celebrates 30 years in business, it has more than 80 staff.

Founded in June 1984 by David Gregson, Exact Abacus Ltd is a family business that has gone from strength to strength during the last three decades.

The business thanked its employees with festivities, a cake and an evening party on Friday.

Originally established to serve the mail order industry with a two-man office in Leyland, the business has adapted with the digital age and now employs 81 staff specialising in e-Commerce services from its custom built head office in Buckshaw village.

In 2007, the reins of the business were handed from David Gregson to his son Lee.

Managing director Lee said: “We’re really proud of our 30 years in business, it’s a huge achievement especially in such a fast moving industry.

“With the rise of multi-channel selling, we’ve found our niche and it’s serving us well.”

Exact Abacus has developed its position in the market as a leading provider of back office and e-Commerce software solutions through the 3EX.NET platform.

The flagship 3EX.NET software, developed in house, is complemented by a range of digital marketing, fulfilment and customer care services. It was launched in 2008 after the company perfected its third incarnation. The platform is now on its 13th version as it continues to evolve.

It supports entrepreneurial businesses looking to provide five-star customer service and grow sales through webstores, marketplaces and new territories.

3EX.NET works on its own or works with a company’s existing software.

It can control and monitor orders and deliveries, stock control, marketing, social media and many other functions.

Several major online retailers and distributors use the system. Outsourced customer care is also dealt with from the Chorley base.

Lee continues: “Exact Abacus have always been at the forefront of innovation, and with our 30th year we’ve been working on the next phase of our already award-winning 3EX.NET software.

“This autumn we’re launching a scaled down version of our custom software for online start-ups, including stock control, order processing and purchasing software.

“And there will be the option to add marketplace and e-commerce management in one easy-to-use system.”

Marketing manager Gemma Baldwin said the roots of 3EX.NET software went all the way back to 1984, even though it was launched some years later. She said: “We are very proud of it - it’s the core of our business. We are on the 13th version now and we are still developing it all the time.”
