Building work starts on new £5m school
Building work is finally underway at a long-awaited £5m primary school near Leyland.
The first sod of grass has been cut, marking the start of development for Trinity Church of England Methodist Primary School Buckshaw Village, as it has now been named.
The planned school, off Buckshaw Avenue, has been plagued by delays.
Construction work on the building was supposed to begin in August last year, but was delayed by red tape.
The school will still open on time in September 2010, although the building itself will not be complete until January 2011.
Children will be taught off-site in the interim period.
Representatives from the Blackburn Diocese, which won a bid to run the school with the Chorley Methodist Circuit, say they are just pleased work can now begin. Fred Kershaw, assistant director for education at the diocese, said: "The ceremony marked the beginning of the building project.
"It's an important step for the future and development of the community in Buckshaw Village. It will be a state-of-the-art building with all the facilities we need to help us deliver a high standard for all who will attend.
"We are looking forward to the school opening to pupils from September 2010 and the actual building itself will be ready in January 2011.
"There will be an official opening when the school is finished but we're obviously a long way off that yet."
The two-storey school will initially cater for 210 children with a view to doubling the capacity if needed.
