Bargain hunters were expected to descend on Preston today for the Boxing Day sales.
Retailers in the city are expected to be slashing their prices with discounts and promotions aimed at people with an eye for a good deal.
Many shops have had sales on on the run up to Christmas - but retail bosses in Lancashire are still expecting a bumper turn-out today.
In recent years the Boxing Day sales have seen shoppers pile into retail parks and the city centre to get reduced-price items.
Keith Mitchell, centre manager at Fishergate Shopping Centre in Preston said: “We are anticipating a very busy Boxing Day thanks to some fantastic discounts being offered by our retailers. With stores such as Debenhams opening their doors as early as 7am we are expecting those eager to bag a bargain will be up bright and early to make their way to Fishergate and we look forward to welcoming them.
Beverley Wilkes, store manager of Debenhams at Fishergate Shopping Centre added: “Debenhams Biggest Ever Half price sale starts at 7am on Boxing Day. Thousands of items will be reduced across the store so we are expecting to be busy.”
Andrew Stringer, general manager at St George’s Shopping Centre said: “While a number of retailers are holding out for the traditional boxing day sales, others have been discounting heavily in the days before Christmas. Over recent years shoppers have come to expect incentives as encouragement to part with their hard earned cash after retailers initially brought the sales forward in a bid to boost sales figures. The Christmas rush came later than expected with shoppers prepared to wait for extra discounts from many of the leading retailers.
“We expect trade between Boxing Day and New Year to be very strong. Many of our stores will be offering discounts of at least 30 percent which I am sure will attract thousands to the centre.”
