Bogus callers steal pensioner's life savings

A retired war veteran had his life savings stolen by two men he invited into his home.

The 91-year-old pensioner, who lives in Fulwood, Preston, allowed the pair into his flat - believing they were there to carry out repairs.

But once inside the deaf and partially-sighted man's home, they stole thousands of pounds in cash before escaping in a white van.

Det Sgt Steve Ryder, of Preston CID, said they were eager to catch the pair before they target someone else.

He added: "This was a callous offence against a vulnerable member of our community.

"It has left him very distressed, shaken and really angry."

Detectives said the pair approached his home in the Hawkshead Road area at around 2.30pm on Tuesday. They had previously visited other addressed in the area asking if residents wanted odd jobs doing.

The men knocked on his door dressed in high visibility jackets and the pensioner mistakenly thought they were working for a housing association and welcomed them inside.

His furious daughter, who asked not to be named, said: "It's disgusting. I can't understand why someone would do this to such a vulnerable person."

Anyone with information is asked to call Preston CID on 01772 203203.
