THE new Bishop of Burnley has been announced by No 10 Downing Street as the Rev Philip John North.

The 47-year-old was introduced to a group of invited guests at the town’s Faith Centre yesterday by the Bishop of Blackburn Rt Rev Julian Henderson.

Rev North succeeds Rt Rev John Goddard who retired in August after 43 years in the clergy.

The new Bishop was educated at York University and trained for the ministry at St Stephen’s House, Oxford.

He has served in Durham, Hartlepool and Norwich. Since 2008, he has been team rector at the Parish of Old St Pancras in London.

Two years ago he accepted the post of Bishop of Whitby, but then withdrew after protests over his traditional stance on the ordination of women priests.

Rt Rev Goddard, had held the office since 2000. The 66-year-old has now retired to live in Tarleton.
