Barn Owl Bill falcon confiscated

Lancashire's best known bird lover has had a rare falcon he was nursing back to health taken off him by police.

Bill Higham, known as Barn Owl Bill, says it is the first time he has ever had a bird he was caring for confiscated.

The 52-year-old was called by vets after a sick baby peregrine falcon was discovered in West Street, Preston, last month.

Several of the falcons had made their home on the roof at St Walburge's Church, Preston, and this particular bird is believed to have had an infection.

Vets for Pets sent the fledgling to Bill's Leyland home in Southbrook Road with antibiotics, anti-fungal medication and painkillers.

A

nd for the past two weeks the wildlife enthusiast lovingly nursed the tiny bird back to health, even bringing its temperature down by spraying its feet with water and pointing a small fan at it.

But he has now had the bird, which he says was making a good recovery, taken off him after Lancashire police's wildlife officer PC Duncan Thomas swooped yesterday.

PC Thomas said "We can confirm that we have visited Mr Higham and have taken possession of a young peregrine falcon in the interest of its welfare."
