A man has been arrested after attempting to steal Morecambe bay’s iconic Eric Morecambe statue.

It is believed that someone attempted to cut through one of the legs of the statue after damage was discovered this morning.

A 32-year-old man has been arrested and Morecambe Council has removed the statue from it’s outdoor plinth on Marine Road Central, Morecambe.

Comedian, actor, singer and entertainer Eric was born in Morecambe in 1926 and died in 1984.

The statue was the town’s tribute to the star and was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in 1999.

The council has fenced off the area and police have appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.

Sgt John Bond said: “We are in the early stages of our investigation and I would urge anyone who may have seen what happened or has any information to get in touch with police on 101 quoting log number 0325 of 11th October.”
