Ask the experts - self defence
Martial Arts teachers Gus Marsden and Mick Mercer talk you through a simple technique for defending yourself against attack.
Welcome to Ask the Experts, where you can learn how to do just about anything local people can demonstrate in a short film on lep.co.uk.
Self-defence is a basic human right but unfortunately the ability to actually exercise this right does not always come naturally to most people.
If you are unlucky enough to be the victim of an attack then could you defend yourself?
If you do not feel that you could answer this question with a confident "yes" then you should consider spending a little time and effort learning some basic self-defence techniques.
By understanding a few simple principles and how to apply them you could develop an effective counter to most situations.
In addition, the confidence and awareness that you will develop from knowing that you are able to handle a violent confrontation will help you to avoid situations before they occur.
The simple technique shown in the video was actually used by a student who attended our six-week self-defence course.
He was followed back to his car and grabbed on the shoulder after leaving a restaurant.
He applied the arm bar technique and being aware that the assailant could be hurt by the hard concrete floor actually moved him forward to a grassed area to put him on the ground before moving away.
If you felt that a simple understanding is not enough for you, then you could move beyond this level and choose a martial art to study where you will benefit in other areas as well as develop a higher level of proficiency in self defence.
