Appliance of science helps school hit the top

Ashton's high school is on top form after being declared the country's number one science college.

The Government has officially named Ashton Community Science College as the most improved school of its kind in England, just weeks after announcing it one of the most improved schools overall.

The accolades come just as the Aldwych Drive school has been given the green light to set up its own sixth form from September.

The school took over pupils from the former City of Preston High at Christmas and is currently utilising the school as an annexe to the science college.

It is hoped that the Ribbleton campus will be transformed into a vocational centre for the city's 14 to 18 year olds.

College principal Chris Lickiss said "This is an incredibly exciting time."

He added: "We have worked very hard to improve standards throughout the school and I was extremely proud to be notified that we were the 15th most improved school in England in terms of sustained improvement.

"The whole school community was overjoyed to then find out that we are considered be the most improved science college in England based on our sustained improvement over the last three years.

"We are immensely proud of our students' achievements which are a testament to the strong teamwork and the continued raising of academic aspirations.

"Ashton has encouraged and enabled every one of our young people to be successful in all aspects of their learning."

Mr Lickiss added: "We are always proud of all their achievements, which are a tribute to the hard work of our students, to the teachers who go the extra mile, parents who work in close partnership with the school and to all our partners who have played their part.

"The level of our improvement is testament to this and our continued commitment to the pursuit of excellence."

News of the sixth form came as the school officially opened its new science labs.

Mr Lickiss said: "The opportunity to now work with and develop students beyond year 11 is something we are already looking forward to and are determined to be successful in."

The college offers vocational courses in health and beauty for its own and pupils from around Preston and Kirkham. The new sixth form will include sciences.
