Larches and Savick Amateur Boxing Club is ready to unearth Preston’s next boxing champions after undergoing a dazzling refurbishment.
The Elswick Road-based gym was set up by former fighters Dave Fitzgerald, Jimmy Moon and Joe Kilshaw more than a decade ago.
From humble beginnings the club has grown over the years and can boast a number of regional, national and international champions in its ranks – including European gold medal winner and 2016 Olympic Games hopeful Lisa Whiteside.
But now after undergoing a major £350,000 revamp, the club is set for an even brighter future.
The new facility was officially opened by ex-European and Commonwealth light-middleweight champion Jamie Moore on Friday.
Co-founder Fitzgerald, whose son Scott won the British ABA light-middleweight title this year, said: “It’s fantastic – it’s a dream really. We never thought we would ever get something like this.
“It started off with me, Joe and Jimmy in a little hut, we took it from there and now we’ve got our very own gym.
“They are fantastic facilities and it means a lot to the community of Larches and Savick because it’s not just a boxing gym, it will be open to them as well.”
Whiteside, who is a member of Team GB’s elite performance squad, admitted she will be eternally grateful for all the help and support the club has given her over the years
She said: “I have been at the club for fours years and in that time I have won maybe three national titles and got on the GB squad and fought for England.
“Before we used to have the kids classes and you couldn’t move but now the gym has doubled in size.”
