Alan's gruelling ride around the coast of Britain

After more than 3,000 miles and over three months of cycling, Alan Pinder will arrive back at Blackpool Tower after completing a gruelling circuit of the British mainland.

With a tent, his cooker and other basic supplies strapped to his back, 51-year Alan, from Ribchester visited the most southerly, easterly, northerly, and westerly points in Scotland, England and Wales.

Setting off from Blackpool’s Promenade on May 1, Alan self-funded the mammoth challenge to help raise money for the RSPCA Altham, the Lancashire East branch, which rehabilitates and rehomes abandoned, injured and mistreated animals.

Speaking during the ride, Alan said: “I wanted to raise funds for RSPCA Altham because I know what a great charity it is because my wife volunteers as a fundraiser for the animal shelter. I was only hoping to raise £1,000, so I am absolutely amazed that the donations are nearing £4,000.

“It really is incredible, and I’d like to say thank you so much to everybody who has donated to my Just Giving page, or by dropping into the RSPCA shops to sponsor me. It really has kept me going!”

The ride saw the Fylde Borough Council worker riding solo all around the British mainland, setting up camp each night before wheeling off again the following morning, regardless of the weather, to complete roughly 40 miles a day.

Given four months off work to complete the ride, he is set to arrive home early with an estimated return time of 5pm this Saturday, where he will meet wife Patricia at Blackpool Tower.

And RSPCA Altham branch administrator, Steve Suttie, has been keeping Alan’s followers up to date with Alan’s progress on the RSPCA website and Facebook page.

He said: “What Alan has done has really captured the public’s imagination. To set off on such a remarkable journey takes a lot of courage and determination, and I’m delighted that the public have really got behind Alan’s efforts and boosted his fundraising expectations so much! We are constantly fundraising to keep the animal centre going, and in the fifty years that the charity has been operating, we have never had any fundraising attempts of this scale! We’re all very proud of Alan, and we want to thank him from the bottom of our hearts for such an amazing thing to do for RSPCA Altham.”
