A whisky a day kept Doris OK - for 98 years

She attributed her long life to a nightly 'tot' of whisky – and a passion for singing.

Great-gran and former mill-worker Doris Whittle, once of Derby Square, Preston, died at the age of 98 on March 2.

The ex accounts officer had two great-grandchildren but was known to all as 'grandma'.

Her granddaughter Caroline Harris said: "She was a popular character and will be most missed.

"She loved whisky and had a drop every night, popular brands like Bell's. Wherever she went, she had a tot."

She added: "Doris was the size of a mouse but had the appetite of a horse – which we believe kept her going.

"She spent 96 years on Derby Square, where she worked in the mill, and was often seen walking shire horses up and down near the smithy in times gone by.

"Even at 98 when being cared for at Marsh House she would still sing and dance to music.

"We have always been proud of her longevity and the fact they had four generations in the family. She never really wanted much in life apart from her family, friends and a remote control for her television!

"The latest member of the family – Keira – spent a lot of her toddler years riding round on Grandma's knee in her wheelchair."

Doris is survived by a large family, including daughter Barbara, son-in-law Phil, granddaughters Caroline and Nicola, and great-granddaughters Leigh-Anna and Keira.

Her funeral is at St Mary's Parish Church, Towngate, Eccleston, on Wednesday at 2.45pm.
