Deserving youngster David Price enjoyed an unforgettable day captaining the world famous Ferry Across The Mersey.
David, 10, of Elcho Street, Deepdale, Preston, took the helm on a ferry along the waterfront of Liverpool and Wirral and was even dressed to look the part.
The young lad was given the dream day after being nominated to Lancashire charity Miles of Smiles by Preston Carer's Centre for his invaluable role as a young carer at home.
David, who is a pupil at Kingsfold Primary School in Penwortham, has a younger brother Logan, four, who has severe learning disabilities.
Logan's growth is restricted as he does not produce any growth hormones. He has the physical development of a two-year-old and needs a lot of help.
As well as helping his parents care for Logan, David also does a lot to help his mum Fiona, who suffers from a lot of health issues, including heart problems.
A few years ago, David saved his family's life after his mum accidentally left the chip pan on and fell asleep. David woke her up and alerted her before the house was set ablaze.
Mum Fiona, 42, who is married to Wayne, said: "David is a super lad and does so much to help out. He is a great help with Logan and is really good with him.
"A few years ago, I had a heart attack and David helps me with my medication and my asthma and knows what to do when I am not well.
"My husband is a bus driver and when he is out at work, David takes over the role of my carer. I am very lucky as he is such a good son.
"David also saved our lives when I left the chip pan on and if he hadn't woken me in time, we would have been killed."
When David was asked by Miles of Smiles what wish he would like to have granted, the youngster said he would love to drive a tank.
However, when charity bosses could not arrange that, David was offered the chance to captain a boat.
To David's delight, he got to captain the Ferry Across The Mersey and even got a certificate to show he had been captain.
Mum Fiona said: "David was chuffed to bits and had a lovely time. He keeps talking about it and telling all his friends. It was wonderful to see him enjoy a special day as he really does deserve it. I am so proud of him."
Karen Rainford, founder of Miles of Smiles, said: "It was a pleasure to spend the afternoon with David and an even bigger pleasure to make him smile."
l Miles of Smiles is a charity run completely by volunteers which grants smiles for young carers and children who have very little to smile about. To nominate a child, visit www. milesofsmileslancashire.com or call Karen Rainford on 07801 446099.
