A 60-year-old woman from Lancashire has been warned she may be sent to prison after admitting sending hate mail to an animal research organisation.
On the day her trial was due to begin at Preston Crown Court, Diane Jamieson, from Preston, pleaded guilty to six charges concerning sending threatening and intimidating letters to Huntingdon Life Science and persons connected to the organisation.

The number of letters sent by Jamieson, of Lytham Road, Ashton, contained in the charges she has admitted, comes to over 40, Preston Crown Court was told.

Eight other charges she had faced are to be left on file after Jamieson admitted six offences of Interference with Contractual Relationships.

The offences cover dates from November 2005 to March last year. A manager based at the Cambridge animal research organisation and individuals connected to the company received the letters.

The judge, Mr Justice Irwin, said under recent legislation the "starting point" for such offences was an immediate custodial sentence.

Jamieson will return to Preston Crown Court to be sentenced on May 22.

The charges were brought as a result of a nationwide police investigation, Operation Achilles, which targeted criminal activity associated with animal rights extremism.
