Will computers clobber R2D2?
Star Wars is poised to explode onto our TV screens as a blockbuster show – but one of its original stars could find himself on the scrapheap.
Preston's Kenny Baker – who starred as lovable robot R2D2 in all six smash hit movies – has so far not been asked back to reprise the role in the show, which is planned to run for 100 episodes.
Kenny today said: "I hope they do but they might be thinking of going with a remote controlled robot.
"Of course I would do it but I don't really think there will be many actors in it."
Kenny, 71, fears that the advent of digital technology will see actors and performers in costumes replaced with computer generated images and special effects.
"They will probably use puppets and digital characters, like they did with Jar Jar Binks.
"They can do all kinds of things these days. It can all be composed in computers and it's not like a real film with real characters."
Star Wars producer Rick McCallum revealed this week that series creator George Lucas has decided to finish off his epic sci-fi fantasy and write 100 hour-long episodes filling in the 20-year gap between last year's final prequel Revenge Of The Sith and original film, A New Hope.
The TV series will examine the rise of Darth Vader and how he seized control of the galaxy.
Mr McCallum said: "It's going to be much darker, much more character-based. This is the news all Star Wars fans have been waiting to hear."
The only original cast member set to appear so far is Anthony Daniels, who played R2D2's partner C3P0.
Kenny, who lives in Ashton, added: "It might mean going to America to live which I'm not really crazy about."
