It was a far cry from their usual pitch behind a pub!
Jubilant Kirkham and Wesham FC fans came out in force to enjoy the big stage of Wembley Stadium.

About 4,000 supporters left Kellamergh Park behind to cram into coaches and cars and hit the road at the crack of dawn for the biggest day in the club's history.

And their journey was even more triumphant – two late goals from supersub Matt Walwyn sealing a 2-1 win in the FA Vase Final.

Hundreds arrived at the stadium early to soak up the scorching sunshine, sample the £6 pies and share a bit of banter with the Lowestoft Town fans.

And some had travelled from much further afield than the Fylde.

Alan and Rosemary Whiteside forked out more than £1,000 on a 7,000-mile round-trip from Saudi Arabia.

The Wrea Green couple's son Richard used to play for Kirkham and Wesham and they wanted to show their support for their favourite team.

Alan, 49, who works for BAE in Riyadh, said: "We're only here three days but it's worth the effort.

"We've followed the team over the years and it's been brilliant to get to Wembley."

The party atmosphere really ignited once fans took their seats in the north and east stands.

Kirkham and Wesham supporters were easily outnumbered by Lowestoft fans but, armed with chequered banners, inflatable batons and club scarves, they swamped their corner of the stadium in a swirling sea of blue and white.

And the roars that went up when Kirkham's super-sub Matt Walwyn scored certainly rattled the rafters.

Former Kirkham and Wesham player David Harrison, 50, of Thornton, said the whole of Fylde was thrilled for the team.

David, who watched the match with his two sons and dad Fred – another former Wesham player – said: "The fans were outstanding and never stopped singing or believing we could win the game."

Julie Wade, 38, had more reason to be proud than most – her brother Michael Horsfall is a Kirkham forward.

Julie, who travelled from her home in Leeds with her two sons, said: "It was really exciting, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

David Rayton, 66, of Fulwood, said: "In every round, we were underdogs and every one we got through was a bonus."

Kirkham and Wesham are parading the trophy on an open top bus tour through the town on Monday night.
