A traditional Preston event was given the 21st century treatment at the city's first ever tweet-up.
Users of social networking site Twitter met at the New Continental Bar, South Meadow Lane, with wi-fi enabled laptops and mobile phones to muse over a set topic.

The question on everyone's lips for the Preston tweet-up on Wednesday evening was 'How can the web can be used in Preston Guild 2012?'.

Ideas included big screens around the city for twitter feeds to be screened on, live feedback during Guild events and free Internet access.

Ruby gem said: "Utilise the radio and LEP to get the older folk involved in web." And Phpcodemonkey suggested: "Intro taster sessions from the 'twitterati' for the uninitiated."

Another idea was to set up a councillor on the Guild committee with a Twitter account.

Twitter has an estimated 55 million monthly users around the world and famous tweeters include Barack Obama, Britney Spears, Jonathan Ross and Stephen Fry.

I was around in the first Guild after the world war 11! There must still be a few of us left! Avenham park was a major venue and should be used again. I remember being in some sort of pageant, using what would be today described as hoola hoops!! Ropers school was heavily involved. The Catholic churches marched, I was with St.Mary's, (now disgustingly a car park). North End were a force to be admired in those days, with Sir Tom being the best in the world! And football played a big part in the events. Let's hope the latest players achieve the ultimate & get us into the Premier Leaugue for the Guild!
The City Council should invite Time Team to find something of interest to put Preston City on the International map. Remember the major find Cuerden hoard? Perhaps an explanation of why it was there!
Preston City should open up their website to overseas ex-pats, I am still in contact with many in Canada, Australia etc.
Anyway good luck to all who will have the responsibility of arranging this Guild & let's make it the best!
P.S. I still have a small (full) comemerative bottle of Port from the 1992 Guild & my cup final ticket from 1954!

If we make the mistake of leaving it all to the council and their consultants, the Guild will quickly become a grim charade, it's up to imaginative and progressive people like these Twitterati, and the rest of us ordinary Preston people to make sure this a Guild to remember, that will set the standard high for our kids when they celebrate Guild 2032.

I also have my ticket and programm from the "54" North End final, how gut wrenching was that, must have been Sir Tom's worst game ever !!
In that early guild I also ran the relay from Liverpool to Preston Flag market with Preston Harriers, carying the replica of the town hall clock tower. This replica was hollow and contained a parchment scroll that had been signed by all the E-pats from all over the world.
We faced a large cheering crowd on entering the flag market, with the Guild mayor and all the dignitary's from Preston and Lancashire.
