Tributes have been paid to former Leyland councillor Mary Duckworth who has died aged 83.

The mother-of-two who lived in Hutton, near Preston, served the Leyland St Mary's ward for South Ribble Council until five years ago.

Former colleagues have remembered "a non-political politician" whose time at the authority was dedicated to rep
resenting people living in homes around Worden Park in the town.

She died peacefully at the home of her daughter, Patricia, in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, last Monday.

Coun Harry Hancock, the only Liberal Democrat councillor left on South Ribble Council, said he would always remember meeting Mrs Duckworth at ballroom dancing classes at St Teresa's Church hall in Leyland.

He said: "Both Mary and her husband, Alan, who died recently, were very keen dancers. She was such a pleasant woman, always jolly and full of life."

Coun Matthew Tomlinson, who served for Labour opposite her on South Ribble Council, said he would remember his former colleague as a "very helpful and polite" woman.

He said: "She always listened and was always concerned with what was best for the people she represented, regardless of how that influenced her politics."
