The parents of a Lancashire man killed in a road accident have vowed to educate others about the dangers of speeding.
Andrew and his wife Hilary, of Woodplumpton Lane, Broughton, Preston, are campaign for measures to protect young drivers.

Their 18-year-old son Matthew was killed when the car he was travelling in crashed into a black cab in Longridge in February 2007.

Matthew's friend Adam Catterall, who was driving, pleaded guilty to careless driving.

He was fined £1,000 and banned from driving for 18 months.

Andrew and Hilary want the test age upped to 19 and they believe insurance companies have a role to play too.

Andrew said: "The high cost of insurance for young drivers often outweighs the cost of their car.

"It means they can't afford to buy safer cars so they end up buying smaller cars such as the one Matthew was killed in – a Peugeot 106, or Citroen Saxos or Vauxhall Corsas.

"Some small cars are like tin boxes – yet they can go the same speeds as bigger cars.

"Car firms should collaborate to design a car specifically for young drivers, with headrests – which could have helped Matthew's injuries – side airbags, a reinforced frame and rubber bumpers."

For the full interview with Matthew's family see Friday's Lancashire Evening Post.

Long live speed limits,

What should be done is motoring killers should be treated the same as any other killer, instead of the 'license to kill' excuse for justice we have to put up with.
