Lancashire's new ruling Tories today came under fire for moving to increase allowances on their first day in office.
The Conservatives put forward a proposal to award themselves £32,990, as opposed to £26,462 which was recommended by the Independent Remuneration Panel.

The panel advised Labour be given £13,022, the Liberal Democrats £10,718 and the Green Party and Independents £2,217 each.

However, the Tory recommendation amended allocations to £10,350 for Labour, £6,878 for the Liberal Democrats and no change for the Green Party and Independents.

The allowances – separate to individual and special responsibility payments – pay for the general running of the party including a whip, secretary and chairman.

County Coun Geoff Driver, Lancashire County Council leader, said: "We have accepted all the recommendations of the panel except for the calculation of the block allocation to individual groups.

"Under our proposal, this recognises the difference with the size of the groups."

>> Ruling Tory party vows to keep promises

The Conservative group has 51 members, Labour has 16, the Lib Dems have 10, while there are three Independents and the Green Party has two.
Last year the majority Labour group consisted of 44 members and the second biggest group, the Conservatives, had 31.

The Tories put forward the amendment during the first full council meeting at County Hall and it will now go back to the independent panel.

County Coun Driver added: "We haven't changed the special responsibility allowance budget either in total or to individual members.

"The special responsibility allowance has been reduced compared to last year."

But in response to the proposal, County Coun Charlie Briggs, leader of the Lib Dem group at County Hall, said: "One of the lessons learned from the MPs expenses scandal is that politicians should not be setting their own allowances, the first act of the Conservative-run county council was to go against independent advice on members pay.

"This amounts to the Conservatives putting pressure on the panel to adopt their scheme. That defeats the object of an Independent Review Panel.

"If we are to start restoring public confidence, we must allow the panel to do its job."

In 2008/09 Labour received £25,164, the Tories got £20,911 and the Liberal Democrats £8,579.

Labour group leader County Coun Jennifer Mein said: "The Conservatives tabled an alternative proposal and I think it's absolutely diabolical that's the first thing they have done – to go against an independent panel and drive through something that goes against the recommendation.

"After all that's happened in the media with national government, you would've thought a bit of restraint would've been shown."

Nothing new here then, local snouts in the trough as well as national ones.
Maybe we need to pay a bit more attention to what the Tories are up to before they get elected,
nationally if given the chance.
It ok having a comedian in charge of a theatre performance, but the country???

With all the deep social problems faced by ordinary people in our County, it is telling that the first priority action of the new Tory administration was to increase their own remuneration.

Then they wonder why people are so angry with establishment politicians.

It doesn't look like they're proposing spending any EXTRA money, just changing the rates at which the existing money is allocated. It's a bit rich giving yourself a payrise though!!

Well so much for "giving Lancashire back to its people". The simple truth is that Cllr Driver needs more money to spread around his group and keep them loyal. So he robs the opposition to pay for it. Makes it harder for them to keep tabs on his lot as a bonus.
Now the question is why have an independent panel?

So far the two key actions by the new incumbents have been to redesign the Lancashire Rose symbol, and to increase their own allowances.

Have these people any sense of the desperation many people outside County Hall are feeling? What answers do they have for the problems of ordinary people?

As someone who normally votes Tory, I find this disgusting- was this really the most pressing thing when they took over the reins of power? I usually associate this kind of thing with the Labour party.

Very disappointing, and will make me think long and hard who I vote for next time, though I would suggest I have nowhere to turn, ruling out the extremists.

The real scandal here is that public money is being used to pay for the running of political parties. It's an outrage! If parties cannot survive financially by attracting sufficient number of paying members, then they should fold, and take the stink of party politics out of local government.

Sam - its not for running the parties as for conducting the business of the Council. All the money stays in Lancashire and does not go to the national parties.
It is the cost of democracy. Only if the council was entirely composed of independents would this money not be spent - but I don't think the County Councvil would function at all.
River - what the heck did you expect. The Tories are bereft of ideas, experience or scruples. Imagine what David cameron would do nationally if this was a flagship victory.
I understand Cllr Driver has corralled all his new Cabinet in one room where he can keep an eye on them. Talk about the bunker mentality!!

In old Parlance "Tory" means Thief. Nothing changes. I was so hoping that people would go out and make a difference on election day. Too many people just acted like sheep instead!
