Published Date: 25 July 2008
A temporary Preston speed camera site which snared more than 6,000 people in four months has been named as one of the country's top earning Gatsos.
The cameras, on the A583 in Preston, snared up to £381,000 in fines and added 19,000 points to Lancashire driving licenses after 6,355 drivers failed to drive below 30mph and were flashed.

It is one of seven camera sites which have cost drivers more than £2.7m over the past 12 months for breaking temporary limits.

The four cameras which operated over a two-mile stretch of the road were installed in July last year while works were carried out. They had already run up nearly £300,000 worth of fines and caught more than 4,000 drivers within 75 days.

In the first few days of operation, up to 100 motorists a day were caught by the cameras – put into place while Lancashire County Council carried out maintenance work at Old Lea Hall Bridge and Lea Hall Bridge.

That was bringing in up to £6,000 a day in fines.

In September last year the LEP named the A583 as Preston's own "golden mile", with the four cameras zapping 5,000 motorists in just 75 days.

So, who said speed cameras prevent speeding? Isn't it funny how when I criticise them for not preventing speeding I get mocked.

I will say though, as a user of this stretch of road at the time, anyone caught by these cameras had no-one to blame but themselves. The signs were clear, both limit and camera presence, and the cameras themselves were obvious.

No speeders - no revenue. Time for Post to grow up and drivers to live within the law.

Well they had to pay for the repairs somehow. Just put a ridiculously low speed limit for a mile either side and.....voila!....freely maintained bridges. The council arent that daft LOL

How very naive, valley lad. It's simply not true that you don't get "caught" if you don't speed. Both my father and I have had tickets for 'speeding' while under the limit. We persevered right through to summons stage, because you are not entitled to the evidence before that. How many people would just give up, and assume the camera never lies?

Why has the road surface yet to be repaired. They took up the white speed cam lines, leaving ruts.

Why in this area were "all" the works not coordinated and done at the same time.

Why are their still road works signs littering the area.

Why are we still paying for the electric companies scaffolding to be in place, weeks after works have been completed.

Why were traffic lights on diversion routes not re-jigged to take account of the extra traffic.

Couldnt run a beerfest in a brewery.

Dozens of road workers are killed, maimed and otherwise injured in road collisions while at work every year. So why not just abide by the temporary limits? Or is the law for other people?

Long live speed limits,

Valley Lad - well said. Unfortunately, the lep is run by pro-speed idiots who think that the tripe on top gear is how people should drive. They've never answered my question either - IS THE lep PRO-SPEEDING BECAUSE SOMEONE HIGH UP IN THE lep GOT CAUGHT SPEEDING?

Allegedly "Dozens of road workers are killed, maimed and otherwise injured in road collisions while at work every year."

I've yet to see any official statistics on the number of road workers killed or injured each year as a direct result of drivers EXCEEDING the posted speed limit (whether permanent or temporary limit). At the moment, the only evidence I've seen is that on one particular stretch of road in Preston, out of a hundred or so thousand drivers, 6,335 were caught exceeding the posted speed limit. Number of road workers killed, maimed or otherwise injured as a result of those speeding drivers: None

The LEP clearly isn't pro-speed - its the facts that speak for themselves. The whole pro-speed camera lobby is based on faulty logic and misrepresentation of evidence.

Scrap speed cameras and bring back traffic police!

If this number of drivers think that the road conditions are safe to travel at higher speeds than the limit, then maybe it is the limit is wrong?

Setting limits that are far too low, in order to generate revenue, is just as likely to bring the system into disrepute as a system that is too lax.

Long Live Speed Limits - now, I know you are an idiot, so my hopes are not high here, but....

Where does it say that the LEP is pro-speeding? Where has it ever said this? Please show evidence for this and reasoning. As far as I can tell, they have highlighted on many occasions badly placed cameras, mobile cameras parked illegally or carefully hidden.

Secondly, as you have ignored from my first comment, do you now understand that speed cameras do not have any impact on speeding? Time and again, I have to suffer morons like you saying I am pro-speeding because I do not support the use of speed cameras, usually because when I get to the bit where I say "they do not prevent speeding" as proven by this article, your fingers are firmly in your ears and you are going "la la la, I can't hear you."

Show me a speeder and I'll show you 10 people driving like idiots below the limit. So sad that so many people are like you and think that speed limits are 100% of what road safety involves.
