A teenage arm wrestler is calling for the sport to become an Olympic event.
Chris Rimmer, 18, started the table-top sport less than three years ago, but he has become one of the country's strongest young arm wrestlers, travelling Europe and pulling in the medals.

Since trying the sport aged 15, Chris, of Delta Park Drive, in Hesketh Bank, near Preston, has twice been crowned British Junior Champion and is now among the top 20 competitors in the world.

He has just returned from Italy, where he competed in the World Championships and he could become an Olympian, if calls for the sport are accepted.

Chris, a member of the Preston Panthers Arm Wrestling Federation, in Tarleton, only got into the sport by accident.

He said: "I was 15 and one of my mate's older brothers started – he started going to the gym and I did the same.

"I got into it, then started doing competitions around the UK and national championships."

The sport has become a huge part of the former Tarleton High School pupil's life and he trains at the club twice a week as well as putting in extra work at home.

He said: "There are five or six clubs around the UK and you get chosen to do British championships.

"If you get noticed you get chosen for international events – next year I am hoping to go to Las Vegas for the World Championships. I would never have gone to Italy if it was not for this sport – I could also be an Olympian, it would mean the world to me."

When Chris first came home from school and told his mum, Carol, that he was going to start arm wrestling, she was not very impressed.

She said: "I am very proud of him but when he started and said 'I am going to do arm wrestling' I did not think much about it.

"I thought 'oh God he will be hanging around pubs' – I had totally the wrong impression of it.

"It is a totally organised thing – I was so surprised by it. I want to say a big thanks to his sponsors, Huntapac and hookerandhooker.com , which meant he could go to Italy."

Chris will be competing in the British National Championships, at The Crofters Hotel, in Garstang, today and tomorrow.

Never heard so much rubbish in my life. Arm-wrestling an Olympic sport? Get a grip.

Why not, No 2? It's a feat of strength and technique, and certainly more deserving than golf, which has just been included in the Olympics from 2016.

I hope Chris gets his big break soon...

Conkers next.

Correct number 5. There is miles more skill, mental toughness and technique involved in a round of golf than there is in what is essentially a classroom game for testosterone (and creatine?) fueled teenagers.

Yes, No 6, but if you're a great golfer you have any number of huge tournaments to show off your skills to the world (and earn a fortune), but if you're an arm-wrestler (or a conkers player, or a squash player actually) your sport's biggest contest is barely noticed.
