A troubled man who slashed his wrists in a city car park has been jailed for four months for having a knife.
Michael Hinds, 23, needed 30 stitches after the failed suicide bid at the Market car park off Ring Way, Preston, in March.

Preston magistrates sentenced him to 120 days in prison after he admitted possessing the kitchen knife which he used to cut himself.

His mother, Christine Catterall, said she is devastated her son, who suffers from a personality disorder and has attempted suicide before, has been jailed for what she claims was a cry for help.

She received a worrying text from Michael shortly before the last attempt in March and she and her daughter Holly alerted police, who arrested Michael when they found he had a knife on him.

Shop worker Christine, 43, said: "He's a very troubled lad.
"I've searched for help before and could not get it.

"He sent me a text saying he was sorry and could not go on.

"The police went round every bridge looking for him and when they found him, he had a knife down his trousers.

"He had to go to hospital in cuffs."

Michael, who lives with his mother in James Street, Frenchwood, spent a week at a secure mental health unit in Blackburn.

Christine admits her son is "no angel" but believes there should be more help for young people like Michael who suffers from clinical depression.

She said: "He's in jail because he tried to commit suicide in a public place. I really think it's harsh.

"I've asked if he can be put on suicide watch. He's only young. It was a cry for help."

Absolute disgrace obviously a cry for help but hey dont help him lock him up and make things 10x worse its going to cost the prison an extra 3000 a week to keep him on suicide watch plus what ever it is to house an inmate these days surely the sensible option would have been to help this boy.

What a sad case for this lad, his mother and sister. I hope he gets help, god knows there is too many people suffering out there. But the local authorities don't seem to care, and the first thing they bleat about is lack of funding or cutbacks in mental health departments. I am afraid we live in an uncaring world. Jail is no good for people who are in a state. It is an utter disgrace.

The Judicial System and the police should be ashamed of themselves. Police officers are no longer capable of using discretion. This young man, no matter what his background was, needed help. instead, he was locked up. I hope this lad gets the help he needs in the prison system.

What a terrible thing to happen to a young man who obviously needs help and support. This man has tried to kill himself for pitys sake, how low/depressed must he be feeling already without this adding to his problems. When we are always reading about people attacking others for no apparent reason and having guns and they get a slap on the wrist or community service it just does not add up. Hope his family are strong, complain LOUDLY about his treatment.

Disgraceful. He had no history of violence...and it was so obviously a cry for help. Prison's going to do him no good.

Makes me laugh that Naomi Campbell walks free after assaulting two policemen and sirupting a flight. This lad attempts suicide and gets time. The Law really is an ass.

This is absolutely outrageous and utterly disgusting. Michael has been treated appallingly, and his family must be constantly beside themselves with worry.

Surely it is inhumane to send a seriously suicidal clinical depressive person, who also has a personality disorder, to prison, when it is so obvious that they need specialist medical attention instead? Michael tried to kill himself as he felt that he could no longer cope with his life - well how is being in prison going to make him feel, how is it going to help him?

Michael's solicitor should continue to fight his case, and get him released on the grounds of proven clinical mental demeanishment, and placed into rehabilitation instead. With the right medication, therapy and support, he can improve and overcome the suicidal tendancies.

Let's get this lad released, and get him the help that he needs to enjoy life.
