A student cyclist has died after becoming trapped under a bus in central Preston.
Heavy lifting equipment and airbags had been used in an attempt to free the Chinese woman following the accident on Fylde Road early on Thursday afternoon.

However, Lancashire Police said that she died at the scene.

They were trying to ascertain the identity of the cyclist, though it is known she was a student at the University of Central Lancashire.

annoyed motorist,

preston 09/10/2008 18:33:56
firstly id like to give my condolences to the family of the deceased
i drive up and down this stretch of road and also plungington rd around the university and have always said that its an accident waiting to happen.
The traffic slowing measures that have been put in this area is nothing short of deadly
the students seem to believe that each one is a pedestrian crossing and its not there faults as they do look like them especially on the plungington rd side
as for the cyclists they tend to mount the pavements just before they reach each bump they back on to road straight after or on plungington they belive they can "squeaze" thru
also the sleeping policemen on arent even laid correctly --there uneven and u see the drivers of the buses and low laying vehicles trying to dodge certain areas of these due to damaging there vehicles
they should of put the bumpers in like at holmeslack or brookfield

I recently spent 6 weeks in Europe and was amazed at the amount of people riding bikes. It was brilliant, this was due to the fact that the cyclists have an independent lane and is in the middle of the footpath and clearly paved in a different colour. We need something like this. Just in last 10 days 2 or 3 (cyclists) deaths in Preston alone!!!.

It is very sad when one some one loses their life in such a way, my sympathy to her family and friends. As 'annoyed motorist' said only a matter of time before a serious accident happened in this area, although this accident took place outside of the 20mph area. I travel along that piece of road every day and stick to the speed limit rigidly, i have had vehicles over take me and other motorist blow their horns and flash thier lights because i am holding them up, all i can say to these people is TOUGH, if your late for work leave home earlier. As for cycle lanes, there are cycle lanes along Victoria Rd W-L-D and up London Rd and every morning i see half a dozen cyclists using the first lane of the carriageway and one particular cyclist actually hogging the white line between the carriageways on London Rd, the only surprise is that no one as come a cropper along here particularly in rush hour traffic, finally do have some sympathy for the bus driver after all he may very easily be an innocent party in all this.

The drivers in Preston can be extremely craeless around cyclists. I am a cyclist and have many a time had drivers pushing me closer and closer to the pavement or a wall. I have also had drivers shouting at me through the windo to ride on the pavement. You would think if they had taken a driving test that they would know that riding on the pavement is illegal. I think it would help if there were more cycle lanes in Preston and also something to make drivers more sware to watch out for cyclists.
