A round-up of news in brief from around Lancashire.
Could Eric soon be joined by comedy partner?Morecambe could soon have an Ernie Wise statue to accompany his former comedy partner Eric Morecambe.
Graham Ibbeson, who sculpted the Eric memorial, is keen either to add Ernie to the current memorial site, or create a fresh sculpture of the duo together. Next year will mark 10 years since the unveiling of the resort's Eric statue.

Park awarded for fifth time
A park was awarded "green" standard for the fifth time.
Wyre Estuary Country Park at Thornton Cleveleys has been awarded Green Flag status, a national standard for parks and greens spaces. Winners of the Civic Trust award are judged to be welcoming and well-maintained locations run by dedicated and enthusiastic staff and volunteers.

City chiefs scrap nuclear-free membership
City chiefs have scrapped their membership to a nuclear-free organisation in a bid to save cash.
Preston City Council is no longer part of the Nuclear Free Local Authorities group which calls for "greater local accountability over national nuclear policy." In cabinet papers, city officials say the move has saved taxpayers £2,000 in membership costs.

Young need role models
A lack of adult role models is driving youngsters in the North West into gangs, according to a youth charity.
The Prince's Trust poll shows a third of people in the region said they do not have a parent they consider to be a role model and more than half (57%) claim they find a "sense of identity" from joining a gang.
A further 26% said they were looking for role models in the gang with the study of 14 to 25-year-olds also showing that 62% are more likely to turn to a peer than a parent.

Have a say on local affairs
If you live in the Worden area of Leyland and want to have a say on issues in your area, go along to the next PACT meeting.
It will take place on September 2 at Balshaws High School at 5pm with PC Steve Gallery and PCSO Tony Wojnarowski.

Lifeboat day
Lifeboat crews will hold an open day to give people an insight into their work.
The RNLI boathouse in Marine Road, Morecambe, will be open to the public from 10am to 3pm on August 30. Visitors can look around a lifeboat and hovercraft.

Keep them entertained
Want to nurture your child's creative flair? A Preston museum has the very thing.
A 'That's Entertainment' event at the Museum of Lancashire will give youngsters a chance to make a book inspired by entertainment in the county.
The event is on Friday August 29 from 11am to 1pm. Tickets cost £3 for adults, £2 concessions.

Butterfly man lands in PAD
Preston artist Robert Howarth is showing his work at the PAD Gallery.
The painter, known as the Butterfly Man, hosts an exhibition of expressionist work until the end of September. The gallery is open every day from Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm and Saturdays 12-4pm.

Tractor pull
The annual Tractor Pulling Championship takes place at Great Eccleston Show this weekend.
There will be pulls on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon – call 01995 672563 for details.

City gym fits in a fun day
A leisure centre is holding a family fun day to raise money for the British Heart Foundation on Saturday.
There will be a surf-simulator, bungee runs, face-painting, games, a barbecue and music at Total Fitness, West Strand, Preston, between 10am and 4pm. Everyone is welcome.

Woman hurt in car smash
A woman was taken to hospital after two cars collided with a petrol pump near Lancaster.
A Honda Civic and a Land Rover Freelander struck the pump at a garage on Lancaster Road, Cockerham, at 10.10am yesterday. A passenger travelling in the Civic was taken to Royal Lancaster Infirmary with minor injuries.

Bin day blues
A council is aiming to cut the number of missed bins on refuse collection rounds by a quarter.
Figures show Preston Council is currently failing to empty around 180 bins for every 100,000 picked up.

Stroll across the bay for charity walk
Take a stroll across Morecambe Bay to raise money for charity.
The walk will start at 9.30am on Saturday, September 6, to raise money for St Catherine's Hospice, in Lostock Hall.
It will cost £12, including transport from the hospice, or £5 for ticket only and starts from Arnside.

Holiday plan looks over
Holiday flat plans for a Lancashire village look set to be knocked back.
Fylde Council planners have recommended a scheme to turn a lodge in Naze Lane East, Freckleton, into three holiday apartments be rejected.
They have advised councillors the change of use would conflict with planning guidelines.

Hawking their wares
Birds of prey from across the world will be on display at a famous Lancashire landmark.
The European owl, barn owl, buzzard and harris hawk will be swooping across the Wilderness Garden at Hoghton Tower on Sunday, September 7.
The show starts at 2pm and admission is £3.

Bonfire scare
A bonfire sparked a blaze which destroyed an old agricultural building in Penwortham. Firecrews were called to the cabin off Leyland Road at 10.50pm on Monday.

Man in hospital after falling 30ft down embankment into stream
A man was taken to hospital after plunging 30ft down an embankment into a stream.
The accident happened at Ribble Lane, Chatburn, Clitheroe, about 10pm on Monday.
Firecrews used ropes to help pull the man to safety.
The man was taken by ambulance to Royal Blackburn Hospital. His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Library room with a view
Favourite photos of Lancashire are being sought for a new exhibition.
Staff at Fulwood library in Preston are asking people to submit pictures of their favourite views from across the county.
The best pictures will be brought together for an exhibition, Lancashire: A Sense of Place, next month.

Local goods going on sale
A host of local produce will be available at the next Penwortham Farmers' Market.
It will take place at St Mary's Church, Penwortham, on Saturday September 6, from 9am to 1pm, featuring a range of meat and fish, as well as sweet and savoury products.
