A woman needed hospital treatment after falling asleep with a cigarette burning next to her.
Firefighters arrived at her terraced home in Kenmure Place, Deepdale, Preston, to find the woman on the doorstep, struggling to breath.

She had been smoking in bed but, when she felt tired, she left the lit cigarette on her bedside table.

But as she fell asleep, the cigarette set fire to a soft toy at 12.26am on Saturday.

The woman, who was in her 20s, woke up and managed to put the fire out but was overcome with smoke.

Firefighters gave her oxygen at the scene and she was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital.

Gary Kiyany, watch manager at Preston fire station, said: "People shouldn't be smoking in bed - it can cost people their lives.

"She was very lucky not to get burnt quite badly."

He said his team fitted smoke alarms before they left and they would be returning to offer some fire safety advice.

What idiocy. Joke as well that free fire alarms have been fitted, at taxpayers expense no doubt.
