A woman was rescued in a hovercraft and taken to hospital suffering head injuries.

An ambulance was called to Sunderland Point, in Morecambe, Lancashire, shortly before 7pm on Thursday, after reports a 60-year-old woman had been injured.

The ambulance arrived but could not reach her home which is at the edge of the River Lune, because the access road is covered at high tide.

The RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) Hovercraft was called and took her up the River Lune, to the Golden Ball Hotel, in Snatchems, Morecambe, where an ambulance was waiting.

It is believed the woman had suffered head injuries after falling over and was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Firefighters from Morecambe also took a 4x4 vehicle to the scene.
