A supermarket, a four-star hotel, takeaways and restaurants are all on a hitlist of premises which have been warned to clean up their act.
Preston City Council bosses have produced a list of 592 food outlets and given them a rating of between 0 and five stars based on their hygiene and food safety.

The worst performers were three takeaway shops – Red Onion in New Hall Lane, Shanghai House in Church Street, and Spicy Delights in Ribbleton Lane – which all received no stars due to cross contamination issues.

A further four earned just one star - Mix Masala in Plungington Road, Pizza City, Ruby's Indian Gourmet Restaurant, and Tasty Village, all in Friargate.

The revelations come as it also emerged there had been 388 reported cases of food poisoning in Preston last year – 67 more than 2006.

>> Are we safe from food poisoning?

The four-star Barton Grange Hotel, near Preston, received only two stars because it "generally failed to satisfy food hygiene law requirements" during its most recent environmental health inspection.

And Asda supermarket in Fulwood was given only two stars due to "generally low" standards, along with Burlington's in Broughton, the Holiday Inn in Ring Way, and the Olive Press.

By contrast, Aldi in Deepdale, McDonald's in Friargate and Pedders Way, plus KFC in Portway were all give a five-star rating and branded "excellent."

A total of 57 premises earned two stars, 249 got three stars, 247 won four stars and 32 are rated as five-star premises.

The findings are revealed in a new Foodsafe league table launched by Preston Council which allows people to check food safety rating online.

Simon Neighbour, the council's environmental health manager, said: "When people find out you're an environmental health officer, they always ask where is the best place to eat and where should you avoid going to.

"Now, for the first time, we can provide the information to help the public choose where to eat.

"It is giving power to you, the customer, so that if you think the food is good and that it is a safe place to eat, then you will choose to eat there.

"However, if the restaurant or takeaway has performed poorly in our inspection then you may think twice about eating there.

"We hope that by giving customers information to help make a choice, this will become a powerful way to raise standards."

Fantastic - the council has got something spot on! How many times do you go to a restaurant and wonder exactly what goes on behind closed doors? Hopefully customers will shun these sub-standard eateries until they clean up their acts.

I remember the last time I went to Pizza city a few weeks back. Some serious ring sting going on the next day. Mind you, don't know if it was the food or the 10 pints of lager I'd knocked back.

Well done to the Barton Chinese Fish & Chips. My favourite takeaway establishment and a lot cheaper than Barton Grange.
