Mourning Muslims in Preston are being forced to delay funerals because bodies are not being released fast enough.
According to Muslim tradition, burial should take place as soon as possible after death, preferably within 24 hours, but in some cases it is taking several days to release bodies, it has been claimed..

The family of Valli Mallu, who died almost two weeks ago after being injured in a car crash, had to wait four days for the body, while a post-mortem was performed.

The 67-year-old's body was released just hours before the funeral was held at Preston Cemetery last Monday.

Iqbal Adam, of Preston Muslim Burial Society, said it is not clear what is causing the delays, but added tighter checks on deaths following the Harold Shipman case could be to blame.

He said: "When we have had meetings with the coroner he says how can he sign a death certificate if he has not had the lab results back.

"It does concern us but when we go deeper we find the coroner can't do much about it until they get a report from the lab.

"There are a few cases where it has been delayed, but we don't know who's to blame."

Preston town centre councillor Michael Lavalette said the Muslim community is being "failed at the most vulnerable time".

In areas such as Bolton special burial arrangements are available for Muslims so bodies can be buried at weekends or Bank Holidays.

The Evening Post contacted the Lancashire Coroner's Office but it referred our reporter back to the Muslim Burial Society.

Strike the lab workers down for trying to find out the full picture surrounding these peoples deaths. What really sticks in my throat in this suposed equal and diverse society is that "special burial arrangements are available for Muslims" on bank holidays and weekends. Thats equality?

It'a a bit unfair blaming this mess on Harold Shipman. Fair dos, he did some bad things, but disrupting Muslim funerals? I think not

Posts 1 and 2 should be ashamed of yourselves and the comment about a Fatwa is the usual narrow-minded drivel spouted when a Muslim story appears on here. Have you just read the same article as me?

It appears that the Muslim community is merely raising its concerns - what on earth is wrong with that? Any organisation or faith has a right to open dialogue with authorities on a plethora os matters and I for one cannot see why Muslims are any different. I happen to be atheist but it doesn't stop me appreciating that many faiths and religions have strict guidelines for births and deaths and, where possible, agencies should try and accommodate the, From what I have just read that is all that the Muslim community is asking.

This has been going on for at least three years. when my Mum died in Chorley hospital we had to wait two and a half weeks before we could have her funeral. The excuse we were given was that the PM couldn't be done because someone was off on holiday!

Everyone in this country has the confidence to be aware a post mortem will be carried out,its essential, its our right by law and a a requirement by law. That makes a death respected and any foul play eliminated...sorry about the Muslim situation,if one of their kids get murdered or die suddenly...dont they want to know why?Coroners have a very important and serious job to do,dont knock them!

Preston Muslim Burial Society should speak to the authorities directly and not bother with this rag, which simply sensationalises Muslim stories to feed the apettite of xenophobes.

You're a bit off here Prestonian Through and Through. The LEP's treatment of this story hardly "sensationalises" the issue. In fact, this piece strikes me as a balanced and non-judgemental exploration of an issue that affects some of our fellow Lancastrians.
