Police have charged a 29-year-old man in connection with the rape of a 21-year-old woman in Preston city centre last week.

Matthew Achomere, 29, of Cromwell Road, Blackpool has been charged with rape, kidnap and false imprisonment.

He has been remanded in custody to appear before Preston Magistrates Court on Monday November 9.

The incident took place just before midnight on Thursday October 29.

The girl was walking home along Church Street, adjacent to Winckley Square, after being separated from her friends after a night out when the incident happened.

She was followed by a dark BMW as she passed the junction with Manchester Road.

On Grimshaw Street she was forced into the front passenger seat of the vehicle, driven away, and raped in the car.

DCI Andy Hulme from the Force Major Investigation Team who is leading the investigation said: "I would still appeal to witnesses to come forward and in particular a couple who were walking along Church Street only 20 seconds ahead of the victim.

"One of the couple was wearing a very long black coat which swept the floor and the other person, believed to be a man, had distinctive blonde hair."

Police have released a string of CCTV images of potential witnesses to the attack.

DCI Hulme added: "I would also renew my appeal to any other people pictured in the CCTV including a man wearing a grey t-shirt, dark jeans and white trainers who was pictured approximately 20 seconds behind the victim on the same stretch of Church Street to come forward and contact police as these people, perhaps unknown to them, could have vital information.

"I would also like to thank the members of the public who have come forward already to speak with detectives but would encourage anyone who has not yet spoken to police who may have information to come forward."

Anyone with information should call Preston Police on 01772 838106 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
