A pensioner from the Fylde area of Lancashire has been duped out of £35,000 by "aggressive" conmen running a fake international lottery.
The elderly resident, whose identity is being protected, paid out thousands of pounds in administration fees in a bid to win a multi-million pound jackpot.

Lancashire Trading Standards officers are now hunting the scammers and pushing local MPs to call for the sending of fraudulent post to be a criminal offence.

Officer Steve Brimble said those running the fake lotteries tend to target vulnerable people.

He said: "Contact is usually made by direct junk mail indicating a large lottery win and asking for a small fee or contact details.

"Scammers then begin telephoning the victim, often befriending them, and asking them to send increasing sums of money for the supposed release of payment of the non-existent lottery win.

"Payment is often sent to criminals abroad by electronic money transfer, making it virtually impossible to track them down."

Anyone who believes they have been conned this way should call 08454 040506.

Every OAP in Britain should receive a government leaflet warning against these scams. Tho I hear it's not always just old people who fall for it!

I agree Kcat, how many times do people need telling "if you aint entered it you ain't going to win it" and any fees up front is a scam.

To be honest, I worry just as much that my elderly relatives will get scammed into buying double glazing or insurance (or whatever) they don't need as get conned in this way.
Ban ALL cold calling full stop and it would be far easier to crack down on such crims. But that's the last thing this or any other prospective 'business friendly' government is about to do.

Lingering OAP,

I have a drawer-full of useless hearing aids, have had my drive tarmacked 6 times, am paying instalments on a dozen funeral plans, have had more than twenty loose roofing tiles replaced, am awaiting delivery of an adjustable sit-up bed, have been told that I am the sole beneficiary in a long-lost relatives will and have just been asked to ring a number in Timbucktwo to claim my win of a 28-day, all expenses paid Carribean Cruise.

Lucky me.
